Michelle Dube started at ACU with a very exciting prospect on the horizon. After winning the ACU Open Day Prize, she had thousands of dollars to spend on an international study experience to our Rome Campus.
When Michelle received the call last year from ACU to tell her she had won $5,000 towards a study trip to our ACU Rome Campus, she couldn’t believe her luck.
“I was very excited; I had never won anything before. I had just moved to Brisbane from Perth and was unemployed, so I could never have afforded to go on a trip without the prize. It was because of this prize I could go to Rome and see Europe for the first time,” Michelle said.
A year down the track, the second-year Bachelor of Occupational Therapy student has just returned from her grand adventure after taking part in the International Core Curriculum program at ACU’s Rome Campus.
Aside from lectures and tutorials, Michelle and a group of other ACU students visited an art school for people with disabilities. They were also lucky enough to witness a papal audience – an opportunity to visit the historic and world-famous Saint Peter’s Square at the Vatican, and to listen to Pope Francis speak.
“For me the real highlight was the papal audience, just seeing people from every part of the world gathering and sharing an experience together. Everyone was included, with the Pope’s speech being translated into more than five languages,” Michelle said.
“Being in Rome was quite eye opening. It helped with cultural awareness, and it was wonderful to be able to see how people live and value different things in a different country. I was so excited to explore the city and see all the top spots I’ve only seen in pictures, including a trip to Venice via speed train.
“It was also a great opportunity to connect with people from other campuses and create networks. And as an added bonus, you get a whole unit completed before semester starts.”
Offshore intensive units are a powerful mode of learning for ACU students, and residential units at our Rome Campus offer students flexibility in their learning.
Exposure to new cultures, languages, communities and experiences means you return from overseas placements with an expanded understanding – not only of the world around you, but of yourself.
